St. Martin (St. Maarten), is one 37-square mile Caribbean island which is shared by two countries...St. Martin is ruled by the French and St. Maarten is under Dutch control. The international airport, on the Dutch side, serves them both and has made St. Martin a major Caribbean destination as well as a hopping-off point for many other islands. The French side is home to luxury hotels and villas, excellent restaurants, long, white sand beaches and excellent shopping all presented with a French flair. The Dutch side is more developed and has an active nightlife, including casinos.

CURRENCY: The official currency of French St. Martin, is the Euro. However, US dollars, traveler's checks and major credit cards are widely accepted throughout the island.

TIME ZONE: St. Martin follows Atlantic Standard Time year round. During the fall and winter, noon on the East Coast of the United States is 1pm on the island. During U.S. daylight savings time, the hour is the same on the Eastern Seaboard as it is on the island..

AIRPORTS: Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) is on the Dutch side of the island, St. Maarten. It offers non-stop flights from the U.S. and Europe. L'Esperance Airport (SFG), located in Grand Case on the French side, St. Martin, is small and accepts island-hopper planes.

CLIMATE: St. Martin's temperatures remain constant year-round, averaging about 80 degrees F (27 C); water temperature averages 78 (F). Trade winds provide some cooling on the coasts. There are occasional rain showers in the late summer and early fall.

ELECTRICITY: St. Martin uses European current (220 volts).

DRIVING LAWS: Both international and foreign licenses are accepted.. Driving is on the right side of the road
