The 4,400 square mile island of Jamaica is completely ringed by the Caribbean Sea. Lying 90 miles south of Cuba it is the third largest island in the Caribbean. Each area of this vast island is completely different...from the dramatic Blue Mountains in the eastern interior to the limestone caves on the west coast. The one thing in common, north, south, east and west, are the sandy beaches. With so much to choose from, most people find one area and settle in, but if you wish to explore, the variety of the scenery is a treat...grassy farmland, jungles, waterfalls, plantations, rainforest, a bit of everything can be found on this lush island.

INFORMATION ABOUT JAMAICA

CURRENCY: The unit of currency in Jamaica is the Jamaican dollar. $1 USD equals approximately 89.29 JMD, but the rate of exchange changes almost daily, and visitors should be advised to wait until they arrive in Jamaica to exchange their money. This will ensure they receive the most up-to-date rate.
Jamaican law requires that Jamaican currency be used when paying for all goods and services, though that law is followed very loosely and the U.S. dollar is accepted almost universally. Keep in mind that this does not mean you will receive your change in US currency. Credit cards may also be used, with Visa and Mastercard being the most widely accepted.

| TIME ZONE: Jamaica follows Eastern Standard Time all year. In other words, Jamaica is on the same time schedule as the East Coast of the United States except during the period of daylight-saving time. Then, Jamaica is one hour behind the eastern United States |
| INTERNATIOAL AIRPORTS: Sangster nternational Airport (MBJ) is located in Montego Bay.on the northwest coast of the island. Norman Manley Internatoinal Airport (KIN) is located in Kingston,, the capital of Jamaica. This is the southeastern area of Jamaica. There are also small local airports in Negril and Ocho Rios. |
| CLIMATE: In winter, the average temperature is 75 degrees; in summer it's about 80. Year-round, temperatures are usually five to 10 degrees cooler in the mountain. Typically sunny year-round, Jamaica has rainy months in May, June, September and October. Jamaica's 4-day weather forecast. |
| ELECTRICITY: Jamaican electrical outlets and voltages are the same as those used in the US, which is 110V/50 Hz. |
| DRIVING LAWS: Good roads and highways connect most of the vacation destinations. Driving is British-style, on the left side of the road. Also, drivers must learn to watch out for the many goats, bicyclists and pedestrians who also use the roads. Valid U.S. licenses are acceptable. |
